16.10 – Unibet New Instant Roulette Maiden Stakes – 7f
An appealing opener to get the action off and running and, on the form available, Roger Varian’s CHEEKY AZ looks the one to beat.
He was caught further back than ideal in a messy race at Newcastle 15 days ago, but to his credit, stayed on strongly to be nearest the finish in fourth. With his stable in typically good form in January, it would be no surprise if he found more improvement to open his account at the second attempt.
LEISUREWEAR can be regarded as the main threat to Roger Varian’s charge. The once-raced filly caught the eye when sixth at Lingfield on debut 42 days ago, faring best of those held-up and, with further improvement on the cards, she’s high on the shortlist.
Selections: CHEEKY AZ, LEISURE WEAR
16.45 – Unibet New Instant Roulette Maiden Stakes – 7f
These are the sort of races that invariably throw up some smart individual’s and this race in particular is armed with significant potential.
Brian Meehan deploys the exciting Gleneagles gelding GLENTANEOUS, who is closely related to the top-class Youmzain. If she’s ready to roll first time out, there’s every chance she could take high rank for connections.
Roger Varian’s INVINCIBLE SWAGGER has to be respected on pedigree. He’s a half-brother to the useful Gold Wand and has been found a decent opportunity to be thereabouts on debut.
POOKY is another appealing debutante being a daughter of multiple group-one winner and top-class Twilight Son. Her breeding suggests she will enjoy this surface given she’s related to multiple winners Harry’s Bar and Mazzini and is the pick of the remainder.
Selections: GLENTANEOUS, INVINCIBLE SWAGGER, POOKY
17.15 – Try Our New Price Boosts At Unibet Fillies’ Handicap – 7f
It’s been twenty three runs since LADY ALAVESA last saw the winner’s enclosure. However, she’s weighted to gain revenge on Perfect Rose on their latest engagement and, from an unchanged mark of 63, she looks a solid option.
VIVENCY arrives in rude health following an eye-catching staying-on second over C&D a fortnight ago and given the winner looks a useful prospect being rated 78, this Noble Mission filly looks capable of finding the necessary improvement to score on handicap debut.
Selections: SKY LAKE, LADY ALAVESA, VIVENCY
17.45 – Try Our New Super Boosts At Unibet Fillies’ Handicap – 1m2f
John Gosden looks to have found MOOHAREEBA an excellent opportunity to shed the maiden tag at the fourth time of asking. She has shaped encouragingly in three starts this term and her third at Wolverhampton four weeks ago has subsequently been boosted.
The winner, Father Of Jazz, won next-time-out and the runner-up is now rated 78 and, on the basis of that performance with her in-form rider taking off a valuable 7Ib, she has a great chance here.
A wide-open affair with Win Win Power likely to start favourite on the back of an impressive victory at Chelmsford last week, However, this race will prove a much sterner test to his credentials and a chance is taken on RED JASPER.
Michael Appleby’s four-year-old ran well when last seen at this track and is a former C&D winner. He’s the highest-rated runner in the line-up and the return to one-mile with the blinkers refitted makes him an appealing proposition.
ASCRAEUS has her first run for this yard since leaving Andrew Balding and has leading claims following on from three runner-up efforts from her last four races. She was second to a 70-rated individual over course-and-distance last year, therefore, her handicap mark of 67 looks exploitable with Hollie Doyle a positive jockey booking.
Selections: RED JASPER, ASCRAEUS
OUD METHA BRIDGE reacted well to the cheek-pieces when creating an excellent impression over course-and-distance in November. A rise in the weights for that victory should prove to be no impediment towards his chances, given the fact he had been placed off higher marks last winter. He certainly holds a favourites’ chance and is selected to follow-up here.
Of the remainder, MAKAMBE looks well-treated on historical form having won from a 6Ib higher mark back in March last year. He was last seen finishing a staying-on third at Southwell and looks a chief threat to the market leader under Joey Haynes.
Selections: OUD METHA BRIDGE, MAKAMBE
