BALTIMORE – Maryland Live! Casino & Hotel is gambling on sports betting coming to the state by starting construction on their property for a sportsbook before the pastime has even become legal.
Residents in the Free State will see the topic of sports wagering legalization on their November ballots.
Should constituents vote in favor of sporting events becoming legal to bet on, the 2021 legislative session would see lawmakers drawing up a structure for the industry.
However, Maryland Live! Casino & Hotel is not waiting for a vote tally with construction already underway. The expansion is expected to be ready and operational by the Winter of 2021 which should be when the market would launch if it’s made legal by Marylanders.
The Sports Betting Venue
The casino is using its Live Center Stage area and remodeling it into a sports betting and dining spot. At the moment, the space is being called the Sports & Social dining and entertainment venue.
Those employed by the establishment are saying that the final product will allow patrons to have a top-notch experience engaging in the viewing and betting on sports matchups.
“It’s going to have the most dramatic LED screens in the region, all kinds of great amenities like arcade games, bowling, as well as new gaming positions within the facility, and table games,” said a spokesperson for The Cordish Companies.
While the expansion is geared toward being a sportsbook essentially, it will be so much more than that.
What’s Next For Maryland
The addition to the Maryland Live! Casino & Hotel is costing the facility $12 million to construct. It is the hope of all those involved that Question 2 (legalizing sports betting) will pass come November. Should voters not wish to make gambling on sports legal in Maryland, the expansion will still move forward.
But rather than being the “ultimate” gaming experience with the inclusion of sports wagers, it’ll still be quite the gaming experience with everything else that will be seen through the finished product.
The people of Maryland will be making the final play call on whether or not the casino should start shopping around for sportsbook operators in November. And with that, the question for all residents remains (Question 2):
“Do you approve the expansion of commercial gaming in the state of Maryland to authorize sports betting for the primary purpose of raising revenue for educations?”
