Tiger Woods Suffers Multiple Leg Injuries After High-Speed Single Car Crash

15-time golf major winner Tiger Woods suffered multiple leg injuries in a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Woods shattered an ankle and had two leg fractures including a compound one. He underwent emergency surgery at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In a statement released on Tuesday night via Woods’ Twitter account, his team says that the golfer was “awake, responsive, and recovering” after the surgery:

How Did The Crash Happen?

Woods was driving a Genesis GV80 in Rancho Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles at around 7:12 a.m. PT when the accident happened. As reported by CNN sports, Woods’ SUV “crossed a median and veered across two lanes of the road before hitting a curb, hitting a tree, and landing on its side in the brush.”

Authorities believed that Woods was traveling at at a high rate of speed while traveling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard in Rolling Hills Estates. Per Yahoo Sport, Tiger was “heading downhill the residential area. His car apparently crossed the southbound lanes and traveled at a substantial distance before coming to rest.”

When the authorities arrived, Woods was still strapped to his seat but was calm and lucid. Rescuers had to use an ax to break the windshield and a bar to pry the seats and metal from around Tiger’s legs. They put a neck collar on Woods, attached leg splints, and used a backboard to get him through the big hole in the windshield and to an ambulance.

According to police, Woods was the only occupant of the car. There were no skid marks or other indications of braking. Deputies who responded to the scene said that there was no evidence of any impairment and didn’t ask the hospital to draw blood. According to a law enforcement source, the sobriety test was bypassed because of the seriousness of his injuries.

What Was Woods Doing There?

Woods hosted the Genesis Invitational golf tournament last weekend at the Riviera Country Club. He was spotted at the tournament on Saturday and was present to congratulate tournament winner Max Homa on Sunday. After the tournament, Woods also played golf with retired NBA star Dwyane Wade.

The luxury car maker was the sponsor of Woods’ golf tournament. The SUV involved in the accident was described as a “courtesy car” by authorities. Genesis posted a photo of a beaming Woods beside the SUB on Saturday:

The GV80 is the first SUV produced by Hyundai-owned Genesis. The 2021 Genesis SV80 SUV has a spate of high-tech safety features, including a 10-airbag system, which authorities believe helped Woods survive what could have been a fatal crash. Police also said that the interior of the vehicle was more or less intact, giving Tiger the cushion to avoid more serious injuries.

At the time of the accident, Woods was headed to the Rolling Hills Golf Club in nearby Rolling Hills Estates for a shoot with Golf Digest and Golf TV. Tuesday was the second day of the shoot and the golfer was reportedly set to appear with L.A. Chargers QB Justin Herbert. Woods’ call time was at 7:30 a.m. He never made it.
